AMS Healthcare Announces 2026 History of Healthcare Award Recipients

AMS Healthcare is delighted to recognize the nine historians receiving funding in 2026 through our History of Healthcare awards program. Together, they are advancing our understanding of the people, ideas and events that have shaped healthcare and bringing historical perspectives to questions that continue to influence healthcare today. The value of healthcare history extends well beyond looking back. It helps us see how our health systems came to be, learn from the choices and experiences that shaped them, and bring that knowledge to the decisions we make about healthcare’s future.

As Canada’s primary funder of research in the history of healthcare, AMS has championed this important field for more than eight decades. Since 2015 alone, more than 90 historians have received support through our awards program. The 2026 awards include Post-Doctoral Fellowships ($70,000), Doctoral Research Awards ($25,000), and Project Grants (up to $20,000), supporting original scholarship, teaching and public engagement. The nine 2026 recipients were selected by an external expert panel for the quality, innovation and potential impact of their proposals. Their work will add new perspectives to our understanding of healthcare and help ensure that history continues to inform the conversations, decisions and policies shaping its future.

AMS Healthcare will continue this investment in 2027, with close to $500,000 in History of Healthcare funding to be awarded. Further details about the 2027 funding opportunities will be announced in the coming months.
