Many technologies are being developed for long-term care settings to improve safety and quality of care, such as behavioural health monitoring technologies to support the assessment of responsive behaviours in dementia. We need to make sure that these technologies are designed in a way that promotes compassionate care of people with dementia and avoids stigma. Andrea’s study aims to understand how the design of a behavioural health analytics dashboard can be used to reduce stigma, increase compassion, and motivate action to address the needs of residents of long-term care. To do this, she will 1) gather a panel of dementia care experts, caregivers, and care providers to design behavioural analytic dashboards that incorporate best practices for reducing the stigma associated with responsive behaviours in dementia, and 2) evaluate how the design of dashboards impact providers’ ability to recognize and empathize with resident distress and motivate compassionate action.
