Building trust by design: Patient-centered education for accountable AI in healthcare

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into healthcare, patients and caregivers need accessible, trustworthy information to understand how AI may influence their care. Laura’s project will build on the nationally co-designed Patient Charter for the Accountable Use of AI in Healthcare to create educational resources with, and for, patients and families. Through co-design workshops, community testing, and evaluation, the project will develop practical tools that support digital health literacy, informed decision-making, and meaningful conversations about AI in care. By centering patient voices, compassion, transparency, and trust, her project aims to ensure that technological innovation strengthens—not replaces—the human relationships at the heart of healthcare. Resources will be openly shared to support patients, families, and healthcare organizations across Canada.
