2026 AMS-Fitzgerald Fellow

Derek A. Garniss is a physician with over two decades of experience in Emergency Medicine, practicing since 2004. He holds certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada with added competence in Emergency Medicine.

Derek has served as Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at Sault Area Hospital since 2016 and was appointed Regional CMIO at ONE Health Information Technology Services (ONE HITS) in 2022. In these roles, he oversees the strategic alignment of clinical and digital health priorities across the organization. He led the successful implementation of a comprehensive Health Information System at Sault Area Hospital, a platform now operational across twenty-three hospitals throughout Northeastern Ontario. Prior to his informatics leadership, he served as Director of Emergency Medicine at Sault Area Hospital from 2012 to 2022.
