Developing Character-Based Leadership Through Networking, Research and Education
My AMS Phoenix project is focused on nurturing compassionate-care through the prism of Character-based Leadership (CBL). CBL is an approach to leadership education that stresses development of, and commitment to, values and principles in the face of everyday situational pressures. CBL emphasizes integrity, commitment to principles and a sense of a higher purpose, allowing leaders to do the right thing in the face of difficulty. If competence confers the ability to do the right thing, character is the will to do it consistently. Compassion is a core element of the character-framework that will be adopted in this project.
I will advance CBL through my AMS project by adapting an Ivey-business framework for CBL training to medicine, raising awareness and education about CBL, exploring CBL through medical education qualitative research, and building a network of individuals who can champion CBL in their local environments. These efforts will hopefully result in a renewed appreciation for the importance of Character development in medicine and a commitment by medical educators and practitioners to better incorporate character development in their work.
