Narrative Medicine Initiative (NMI) at Western University

Narrative Medicine uses stories to bridge the gap between patients and providers, teaching that how care is delivered (the process) is just as important as what care is delivered (the content) This fellowship seeks to incorporate and cultivate Narrative Medicine at all levels of medical education at Western University to improve how care is given and received Initiatives being led by the Fellow include:

  • Reflective-Writing based portfolio course (Undergraduate Medicine)
  • Narrative Medicine based competency curriculum (Postgraduate Medicine)
  • Narrative Medicine Working Group (Continuing Medical Education)
  • Community Engagement Series: “The Patient Experience: Learning from those we serve”

Expected Outcomes:

• Narrative Medicine and Reflective Practice incorporated into undergraduate and postgraduate medicine in a mandatory, longitudinal fashion

• Two major research contributions on the use of reflective practice as a means of promoting and assessing professional competency development

• The development of a sustainable interdisciplinary community with maturing collaborations among health professionals, the wider university, and the general public
